Species Description
The Macaroni Penguin is the most numerous species of penguin with nearly 18 million individual birds found in the sub-Antarctic and Antarctic. It is a species of crested penguin with long bright yellow and orange feathers above its eyes. Adults are about two feet tall and weigh an average of 12 lbs. Like other penguins the Macaroni eats fish, crustaceans and squid. They form large (100,000+) breeding colonies during the Antarctic summer and mature males will perform elaborate and noisy displays to attract a mate. Although the Macaroni Penguin population is large it has been placed on the IUCN vulnerable list due to rapid recent declines in some populations.
